They're baaack! Maybe they never left, but in preparation for a smalltown football pep rally that I was going to on Thursday afternoon in Springfield, Oregon, I impulse-bought a coonskin cap (the mascot is the Millers, which is not at all the same as a Trapper, but it was hot out and I hadn't eaten anything in hours, so whatev).
We stopped at this restaurant in the middle of NOWHERE, Cali, and the nice man behind the fudge counter was selling these "Dan'l Boone" hats for $8 each. THAT'S IT. I know, right?! So I snagged one, and wore it in the 100 degree heat like our pioneer forefathers did.
Here is a closeup of the hat, and thermometer confirmation of the heat:
So now that I have a coonskin cap, it seems appropriate to pay homage to Daniel Boone in some way, and figure out what his deal was, really. So I log on and do some light googling, only to find out that Boone DISLIKED COONSKIN CAPS and instead was into felt hats. What on earth!?Did he not live off the land??
Coonskin caps make sense to me, except for the tail that feels really life-like actually, I am still not sure if it is a real raccoon tail but it is a liiittle too realistic. Need to get it appraised at an antiques roadshow. Or set it out on the sidewalk and see if dogs try to bite it.
If you are ever driving from San Fran to Portland, stop at this place and bring $8 with you for the best frontier fashions. Look how it flows majestically down the neck, like a little furry sidekick for your head:
That's awesome. Grace showed me this post. I just started selling coonskin caps on my website! Most of them are a real raccoon tail, but the hat part is fake fur.
