this world is awfully big...

If walking around a big city on your morning commute in a beret and tossing it just before clocking in isn't your idea of "making it," then I don't know what is.

The look on Mary's face when she throws her inhibitions and only head protection from the harsh Minneapolis winter into the air with complete abandon says that I, too, can "make it after all," and that I "can have a town," why don't I take it?

Entertainment Weekly calls Mary's hat toss the second greatest moment in television history. I remember eating nachos and watching this opening montage with my sister when we were really little, wishing that we had a gypsy neighbor-slash-BFF who lived upstairs and a gruff boss like Ed Asner as I worked as associate producer for the 6 o'clock news.

(I love the look of complete disgust on the old lady's face just to the left of Mary, totally confused as to why someone would be THAT happy. But I get it.)

Here's Mary and Rhoda, straight kickin't it at ladies night:

"Love is All Around" by Paul Williams
Mary Tyler Moore Show Lyrics

Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it's you girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it

Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

How will you make it on your own?
This world is awfully big, girl this time you're all alone
But it's time you started living
It's time you let someone else do some giving

Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all
